High school juniors and seniors who have dreaded taking college entrance exams are learning that an increasing number of schools are no longer requiring them as part of the application process. ACTs and SATs, two tests nearly universally accepted for years, will no longer be required of incoming freshmen at Wake Forest University and some other schools.
The move away from standardized testing comes as admission officers put greater weight on other factors including grades, curriculum, extracurricular activities, writing ability, and evidence of character. Many people believe that standardized testing doesn’t give an accurate prediction of academic performance and that belief hasn’t resulted in a decline in quality at schools which no longer require them.
For schools which drop the college entrance requirement, much more attention to specific applications must be made in order to select the best students. Small, private schools who usually get a manageable pool of applicants can handle the switch, while larger colleges and universities may find the adjustment to be especially burdensome.
Along with Wake Forest, other schools who are now SAT-optional include: Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Wittenberg University, University of Phoenix, Allen University, and Bard College. In Texas, students graduating at the top 10% of the class are automatically admitted to the state university while in some other states only out-of-state students are required to present their SAT or ACT scores in order to be considered for admittance.
Academic testing for school-age children is also under review as schools look at ways to comply with the federal “No Child Left Behind” act which encourages testing.
