Illinois Students Attend School Virtually

January 7th, 2008 by Matthew C. Keegan | Filed under College News.

Not every student has to get up early in the morning, throw on a pair of jeans, stop by Dunkin Donuts for a cup of joe and a sausage omelet before heading off to classes. The University of Illinois has introduced a fourth campus, but unlike the previous three this one has no desks, no buildings, not even a campus.

PC MedFor 15 new students, their new campus is in cyberspace, as the University of Illinois has rolled out a fully-accredited online version of the school. According to the university, degree programs in Education and Nursing were launched this week with additional programs in Business and Finance, Technology, Patient Safety, and Recreation, Sport, and Tourism to be internet-ready later this year.

According to a report appearing in the Chicago Tribune, the school began to explore online learning more than two years ago as a way to expand their reach, offer alternative learning opportunities for students, and to raise income.

The University of Illinois is following a trend embraced by major public and private universities over the past decade: offer an alternate way for students to earn their degrees, through the use of internet technology. Illinois’ program will help the university to compete with commercial colleges including the University of Phoenix which has been offering degreed programs for more than two decades.

As is the case with many online programs, students who participate in the Global Campus never have to set foot on an actual campus and they will receive exactly the same degree offered to students who attend the university’s brick and mortar campuses. Even student financing is available for cyber students, offering yet another reason for college bound adults to explore studying online.
