Jenne, thank you for your comment, but I disagree with your statement.

Saying, "no matter what kind of loan you take out, that's not a good thing to do," suggests that any form of borrowing is wrong. Well, for some people this may hold true but for the vast number of consumers, borrowing is done responsibly.

Personally, I doubt that I would take out a payday loan, but if I did, I would be responsible for acquainting myself with the terms of the loan and I would make sure that I paid everything back on time and with interest.

Clearly, much of the problems over the past few years involved lax lending standards. Some lenders pushed loans through while some consumers were clearly unqualified to borrow -- both parties were responsible, but that doesn't mean that the entire lending industry is at fault.

And yet it seems inevitable this’ll be drowned out in the emotion of the moment. Come on people, haven’t the last 8 years proved that we can’t get along acting in the heat of the moment? We need to think about what we’re doing, and what a lot of people are doing is borrowing what they can’t pay back. No matter what kind of loan you take out, that’s not a good thing to do.

Thank you for your comment, Payday.

I believe that there have been problems with payday loans, especially where the terms of the loan weren't made clear. Legislation has changed that, making it easier for consumers to understand what they are getting into before taking out a loan.

As with any borrowing option, consumers should read the fine print, ask questions and consider all options before moving forward. Certainly, there are some people who are irresponsible with their borrowing and are quick to cast blame elsewhere for their decisions.

I have been working in the payday loan industry and to this day still do not understand all the hostility. This study is only one of many that confirms what we already know- payday loans are not bad. Sometimes irresponsible borrowers get payday loans when they shouldn't. Not the lender's fault there. Banks and other financial institutions want us out of business so that they can have a monopoly on credit, both short and long term. Then they can charge application fees rather than interest and look like the good guys, even though they would be charging more than a payday lender. This country is full of crooks, but payday lenders aren't some of them.
