@Doctor — Thank you for your advice. I have heard similar advice regarding Purell and antibacterial soaps as their overuse can cause more problems in the long run.

@Shelly — I apologize; I have clarified the statement in the first paragraph and removed the resultant redundancy in the fifth paragraph. I appreciate your pointing this mistake out.

Please note that the survey described in your story, “Athletic Trainers Note Surge In Skin Infections” was conducted by Molnlycke Health Care at the NATA annual meeting. So, it polled the NATA members, but NATA did not conduct the survey. Any way to clarify this, please? NATA and Molnlycke would both appreciate the clarification.

Washing with low concentrated chemicals, antiseptics and detergents may can result in killing good bacteria and encourage proliferation of MRSA. Excessive chemicals also produce dry skin and encourage bacterial colonisation on the skin. It is advisable to wash with soap and water and not use strong antiseptics and antibacterial soap.

The athletes must be forced to take a shower immediately before and after activities, If they don’t then these athletes are helping the bacteria to spread in their team and one may die from these infections.

I feel we must treat this callus attitude similar to a nurse refusing to wash their hands before examining you in the hospitals. It’s not the unhygienic athletes I am worried about but the ones who take care of themselves are the ones who will suffer.
