Your son or daughter or other loved one is away at college, separated from you by time and distance, but still close to your heart.

With the spring semester now in full swing, the weather is anything but warm. This means that for the next few months your college student will be spending more time indoors than out, perhaps desperately looking for a reminder that sunnier days are yet ahead.

Time for you to assemble a college survival kit!

Yes, in the annals of college history there is one fact about college students that always rings true: young men and women absolutely appreciate loving gestures from home reminding them that they are not forgotten, even missed. A college survival kit though whimsical in nature, can have a powerful effect of in its simplicity.

Let’s take a look on how to make a college survival kit:

Be progressive. First, one important point: you can purchase a college survival kit from a retailer, such as Target, but that takes away from the personal touch of making a kit yourself. Second, only you know what your college student really likes, those loving ingredients which say “you care” to them.

A personally crafted college survival kit is one that won’t soon be forgotten!

Think innovative. What will you use to house all your goodies in? The container can be disposable, such as a cardboard box, but why not come up with something that can be used again? If you are shipping the package, then you will a big enough box to put everything in it.

For women, a decorative box for the dorm can come in useful especially if it can hold items such as personal effects, food, or even books or supplies. For men, filling up a laundry basket or duffel bag and placing that within a carton is good too. Of course, if you are dropping your kit off personally, then the shipping container is of lesser import.

Get creative. Now for the fun part! What should you put in the survival kit? Whatever will fit!

Seriously, that means including whatever your college student likes. Homemade brownies, cookies, and cakes can be cut up, wrapped, and placed inside of a reusable container. Make enough for your student, plus plenty to share with dorm friends. Gift cards, toiletries, laundry detergent, paper products, room decorations, ramen noodles, cheese crackers, peanut butter, pens, pads, you name it. A personal note, recent pictures (yes, we have Facebook), or a card from “all of us” can help pull on the heart strings of your son, daughter, or friend.

Be connective. Shipping can be done through the post office, FEDEX, or UPS. Just make sure that your box can get delivered to a place where it isn’t left outside, preferably to the college’s post office.

Or, if you have a planned visit coming, present your college survival kit face to face.
