College Scholarship News & Notes

-------------------------------------

Students compete for billions of dollars in scholarship money annually, monies given away based on merit, need or a host of other factors. As college costs continue to increase well above the inflation rate, many students pin their hopes on higher education on such scholarship opportunities.

At SayCampusLife.com, we keep our pulse on college scholarship trends, sharing with you from time to time new opportunities as well as some of the newest to be made available. As always, follow the instructions offered by the scholarship provider before applying.

1. Bryant & Stratton College Online is offering full tuition scholarships under its “Pay It Forward Scholarship” program. Simply write a 200 to 500 essay explaining why you are deserving of such a reward and, if picked, you’ll win a scholarship and have the opportunity to give a second scholarship away to someone else.

2. The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has received a generous $10 million gift from a Wells Fargo & Company executive and his wife. Mark and Jill Oman made a donation to UNI, stipulating that these funds be used for student scholarships. The gift is the largest of its kind ever received by this university.

3. If you live within 30 miles of a Cumberland Farms store, you may be able to qualify for one of 130 $1,000 college scholarships to be awarded in 2011. The Minnesota-based retailer’s “Believe and Achieve” program is active right now, receiving applications through December 15, 2010.

4. Law school is expensive, but when the UC Irvine School of Law launched, it offered students in its inaugural class free tuition. Alas, those days are over, but for members of its third entering class (class of 2014), the school will trim 33 percent off of its tuition. Costing $40,000 annually for in-state students and $50,000 annually for out-of-state tuition means that the savings under this offer are huge.

As always, we’ll keep you posted when new scholarship opportunities come to our attention. Stay tuned!
