Likely, not a few students would have stayed put if they put into practice several essentials that when applied together can lead to college success. There are a number of ways to enjoy a more enriching college experience. We list four of those ways here.

1. Go to class — Barring an illness or a legitimate emergency, always plan to attend every class. Your college classes last only for one semester and one missed class can put you behind. Even if you think that you know everything, when it comes to a borderline grade, a professor won’t take kindly to a student who misses classes. That means you might not receive the benefit of the doubt and you could very well be penalized for your absences. Besides, getting to class every day leads to being ready to go to work daily. 2. Take care of yourself — For most students, the time that they spend at college is the first time that they’ve spent away from home. New found freedom. New responsibilities. The chance to explore and learn more about yourself. It can also lead to a downward spiral for you physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. At Purdue University, the Indiana school emphasizes the importance of getting enough sleep, managing stress, eating right, handling homesickness and relating to your roommates. One or more of these challenges can make college a chore and could take you down the wrong path.

3. Develop sound study habits — We all need a quiet place to work and rest. To study too. The Academic Skills Center at Darmouth University advises students to find a good place to study, to study in chunks, to make good use of daylight hours when you are most alert, to pour your energy into your top three classes and to study actively. When you find the right place to study and you make a point to concentrate on your studying, you’ll learn and retain more. Students who flunk out of college generally do so because of poor study habits.

4. Get involved — A solitary existence on campus leans to loneliness and can be especially problematic for students who battle depression. Students that join a club or two are better connected and supported, which can lead to success after college. A cultural club allows people to get to know each other socially. An academic club can help students land internships and find jobs according to assistant dean Craig Mourton of Fairleigh Dickinson University. If you can handle both types of club, then more power to you!

Most students attend college fully expecting to graduate. Those plans can quickly become unraveled when facing problems at college alone. You can have a better college experience, but that effort must begin with you.
