How to Survive College Summer School

How to Survive College Summer School
  • Opening Intro -

Taking classes during the summer months while your friends are working, playing or otherwise not sitting next to you in class can take its toll on you.

-------------------------------------

You thought it was a good idea to take a class over the summer, but now you’re having second thoughts and are considering dropping it. Hold on there! You can finish your summer class and still enjoy the season. What’s more, if you hang in there you’ll earn your credits and be one step closer to obtaining your degree.

1. Maintain your perspective. Most summer classes are six weeks long, giving you perhaps a full month off before you must return to school in the fall. Those six weeks will be over before you know it, giving you ample time to enjoy a lengthy break before the fall academic semester or quarter begins.

2. Pace yourself. Summer classes can sometimes be brutal, especially if you are taking a class that would have been tough in the fall or spring semesters. You’re packing 15 weeks of intensive work into six weeks, giving you much less time to tackle the same amount of work. The best approach here is to attack your work in slices, studying an hour or two, taking a break, returning for more study and research time, and setting aside dedicated time to write your papers.

3. Reward yourself. You’ll be studying six or seven days a week this summer, with little free time to get a full day’s break. One way to provide “reward” time is to move up your schedule to build in a day off. This could mean a trip to the beach on a Saturday or a Sunday, or hanging out with friends following a weekday class. Reward yourself for reaching incremental goals such as doing well on a test or completing a difficult assignment.

4. Consider your wallet. Dropping a class at this point in the game means that you’ll lose some money as the college withholds fees and you’re stuck with a textbook that might not be good next semester. The last thing you want is to be burdened with a financial debt incurred because you grew weary. Sum up the strength to persevere and you’ll soon have this class behind you.

Considerations

Summer classes are typically more intimate with fewer students enrolled and a more relaxed professor on hand. Consider studying with your classmates, sharing each other’s burdens. Also, your professor may show some flexibility with an assignment, giving you extra time or some leeway as you get your work done.
