4 Jobs in Cyber Security That are Perfect for Millennials

  • Opening Intro -

Cyber Security is a growing industry.  Estimates show that there will be 1 million job openings in 2016 alone.

In the next 5 years, the cyber security industry is projected to grow from a $75 billion dollar a year industry to more than $170 billion.

-------------------------------------

This creates huge opportunities for Millennials looking for a career after graduation. Millennials grew up with computers and they have been given the basic computer skills at a much earlier stage in life than generations before them.  This means that there are much more sophisticated cyber criminals trying to damage businesses of all kinds.

Because of this fact there will be a huge growth in the need for cyber security for all sizes of business.  The growth in the cyber security industry will create more job openings than most industries and the starting salary for those jobs will be considerably higher on average.  Here are 4 common jobs people in this industry have.

Cyber Security Risk Analyst

Because of the prevalence of data breaches people have formed entire companies to prevent businesses from being victims of a data breach. A Cyber Security Risk Analyst is someone who comes to your business and determines where your business may be at risk and recommends certain products along with internal policies to protect your business from a data breach.  They typically are protecting your business from malware, denial of service and viruses.  To succeed in this role, you will need to have an in-depth knowledge of databases, networks, hardware, firewalls and encryption.

Forensic Expert

A Forensic Expert is a digital detective. Some people even refer to them as a modern day Sherlock Holmes.  Today this job entails investigating where and how a hacker gained access to a company’s internal server after a data breach.  This is a role that is more important than ever and the need for talent in this industry is going to grow immensely over the next decade.

One reason for the growth in this specific job is because each state has rules and regulations for how a business is required to respond to a Data Breach.  In most states, the business is required to hire a forensic expert to find the source of the breach and fix it.  In many cases this is a hacker, but a forensic expert can also be needed to track down a white collar embezzler or a malware attacker. With cyber security becoming more of an issue in the business community, the need for highly qualified experts to fill this role will continue to grow over the next several years.

Cyber Insurance Underwriter

Cyber Insurance is the quickest growing product in the commercial insurance industry.  By the year 2020 premiums are predicted to amount to $20 billion in annual premium.  Up from $2 Billion in 2015.  This creates huge opportunities for growth in the commercial insurance industry and should make the industry fairly steady for job growth for the next several years.

Cyber Insurance is sold in two parts, first and third party coverage. The First Party coverage is frequently called Data Breach Coverage and it covers the damages to you and your business. The Third Party Coverage is typically called Cyber Liability and it covers your business for damages to customers and other third parties who might be damaged by a data breach that occurs within your business.

Cyber Crime Investigator

Similar to a forensic expert, A Cyber Crime Investigator investigates criminals who commit their crimes online. The main difference is they are attempting to find and prosecute the criminal where a forensic expert is trying to help the business fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.  The crime being investigated is frequently associated with a Data Breach. Other crimes they may investigate include identity theft, cyber stalking, copyright infringement, malicious software and child solicitation.
