All You Need To Know About College Sports Scholarships
  • Opening Intro -

Going to college soon? Or are you a college student who is passionate about sports.

You would do just about anything to get your hands on that sports scholarship, wouldn’t you?

-------------------------------------

However, before you get your hopes up, it is important to understand the hard reality of winning this award.

The odds may probably not be in your favor

According to research, there are roughly 138,000 athletic scholarships that are available for Division I and Division II sports. This may seem like a large number but it isn’t. As more than one million students play college football, all of them are competing for these scholarships. Therefore, you have to find a way to exceptionally stand out.

Make yourself a discovery

Unless you are a superstar college sports player, sitting in the lecture room and waiting for someone to notice your talent and abilities is virtually impossible. Take the initiative and introduce yourself to the team coach or send an email that declares your interest including the position that you would want to play.

Scholarships are not guaranteed

Athletic scholarship must be renewed on a yearly basis and that is at the coach’s discretion. Therefore, if you receive a scholarship, do not think you will have it as long as you are in college. As such, you have to work twice as hard. Remember, good grades also come into play when being chosen for a scholarship.

Take advantage for your Division III college

While Division I schools are often considered the best, Division III colleges, which are typically smaller give merit awards for academics and other student accomplishments. If you are from a small college, your chances of winning a scholarship are greater.

Always take flattery with a grain of salt

Your college coach may flatter you from time to time by saying that there is a lot of scholarship money to dish out but this does not mean that you will be the recipient. Therefore, you should not have high expectations in order to not set yourself up for disappointment.

Playing high-level college sports will be a full-time job

Division I athletes are often called full-time college employees because of their training hours. A survey conducted by The NCAA found that playing college football required 43.3 hours per week while college baseball occupies 40.1 hours. Due to this huge time commitment, as a Division I athlete, you may not be able to major in rigorous degree courses such Sciences or Engineering.

Granted, receiving a college sports scholarship can be a tremendous help especially when it comes to finances. However understanding what these offers entail will enable any athlete to make the best decision. Be sure to understand what you need to do to get the scholarships and how to keep them.
