Be sure to go back home often and meet with your oldest friends in person. Over holiday breaks, you can go back to your old high school or go on trips out of town to see your extended family. Staying connected with your true friends and loved ones will prevent you from feeling isolated while on-campus.

Be Open to Lightening Your Course Load

College students who go away to school can go into shock when they find out how difficult some of their classes are. Although they will have lots of time on their own to study and socialize when not in class, they may not be able to deal with seeing their grades slip. If you cannot handle taking a full course load, drop some classes and work toward an online counseling degree instead. In actual fact, you can take online classes for almost any major and you’ll also have more flexibility with your schedule and study requirements.

Talk About Everything That Is Stressing You Out

If you don’t want your parents to know that you are not thoroughly enjoying your first year of college there are mental health professionals that you can bounce your thoughts off. Find out what campus life resources are available at your school for helping to resolve paying tuition, changing your major, or dealing with dating violence. You absolutely need to talk it out when you have problems at college and find yourself feeling more depressed every day.

College a unique experience that most young adults have and they can often feel like life is spinning out of control during their first year away from their parents. Since you’re expected to succeed, you can also feel pressure to take care of your own problems. There’s a way that you can get the help that’s needed to see your way through college without feeling overburdened or becoming an unhappy student.
