It is certainly premature to declare that Alabama and Florida State will meet in the BCS title game in Jan. Both teams are 9-0 and have three regular season games left. Each must win their respective conference titles. Both are expected to stay unbeaten for the rest of the season.
BCS Spoiler
Stanford played the spoiler by beating Oregon on Thursday, effectively ruining the Ducks’ chances of playing for the championship. With Oregon losing, Ohio State and Baylor remain the only two other major programs that are still undefeated. However, schedule weakness will keep either team from BCS consideration unless both the Tide and Seminoles lose a game.
It was a given that two-time defending national champion Alabama would return to the BCS when the season started. Florida State, however, was ranked behind Clemson in the ACC and had the Tigers on the road. When the two teams met, the Tigers were routed and Florida State rose to the top of the ACC. Moreover, it has won its nine games in convincing fashion, dismantling weak and strong opponents alike.
Grudge Match
Should Alabama-Florida State meet up, it’ll also represent a grudge match for the two conferences. The SEC has been dominant in college football, with its teams winning the last eight national championships. The basketball-rich ACC has been playing in the SEC’s football shadow and desperately wants to overcome its also-ran status. The Seminoles offer the conference its best shot of retaking the national championship with Miami last winning it all in 2001. Florida State has two national championships to its credit, winning in 1993 and again in 1999.
This weekend’s action involving the top teams has Ohio State traveling to Illinois, Florida State hosting Syracuse, Alabama traveling to Mississippi State, and Baylor hosting Texas Tech. In the BCS poll, one-loss Stanford is rated at No. 4, just ahead of Baylor and plays at USC. Oregon, now No. 6, will host Utah.
Alabama finishes its regular season by hosting Chattanooga and then traveling to Auburn on Nov. 30 to take on the No. 7 Auburn Tigers. There are now seven SEC teams in the Top 25.
Florida State’s game against the Orangeman is its final ACC contest of the season. It will then host Idaho before playing at Florida to finish its regular season. Pity the Vandals for scheduling this game.
Conference Title Games
The Georgia Dome in Atlanta will host the SEC championship on the afternoon of Dec. 7. That evening, the ACC has its turn with its championship played at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. If all goes as many hope that it will, we’ll know if a Alabama-Florida State matchup is set around midnight that evening.
