US Census Bureau Jobs Provide College Cash

December 2nd, 2009 by Matthew C. Keegan | 3 Comments | Filed in Career Planning

Make no mistake about it: college jobs are scarce with many schools having cut back on hiring. Notably, quite a few businesses in the vicinity of even well trafficked college campuses are struggling, curtailing hours and keeping staff thin.

womanWith fewer jobs to come by, cash strapped college students have to scramble for work, with some students desperate in their search to make enough money to help pay for their education.

Temporary Jobs

One area where jobs will soon be plentiful is with the US Census Bureau. Beginning early next year, the federal government will be conducting its decennial census which means armies of temporary employees will be sent out to ensure that more than 307 million Americans are counted. Many temporary workers have been hired and are already on the job while others are still needed.

The US Census Bureau operates its National Processing Center (NPC) in Jeffersonville, Indiana and has a pair of call centers located in Tucson, AZ and Hagerstown, MD. In addition, the bureau has regional offices located in Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Seattle.

When all is said and done the Census Bureau will have hired hundreds of thousands of temporary workers to fill a variety of positions across the country for the 2010 census. Prospective workers can apply today to earn competitive weekly pay, work flexible hours as well as serve their communities.

Hiring Requirements

According to the Census Bureau, “All census takers must be able to speak English, but people who have bilingual skills are needed in communities where a large number of residents primarily speak other languages. If you have the appropriate language skills and cultural knowledge to communicate well in your community, we encourage you to apply.”

Apply today by contacting your Local Census Office or by calling 1-866-861-2010.

Now Hiring: Census Workers

January 6th, 2009 by Matthew C. Keegan | 8 Comments | Filed in Career Planning, Personal Advice

College students who are looking for part time work may want to consider the U.S. Census Bureau. The pay is good, the job is temporary, and the work you do for the federal government can be included on your resume.

College students who are looking for part time work may want to consider the U.S. Census Bureau. The pay is good, the job is temporary, and the work you do for the federal government can be included on your resume.

College students understand that balancing their studies with a part time job can be a challenge. When carrying a full credit load, even working a few hours per week can be a burden that can make life difficult.

However, there is one job that comes around every ten years which could be the perfect temporary (and part time) position for some college students. Courtesy of the U.S. Census Bureau, census takers are still needed to help make the decennial census a success. 2010 is the next year that a national census will be conducted, and the census bureau is actively recruiting individuals now to fill available positions.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau:

Conducting the census is a huge undertaking. Thousands of census takers are needed to update address lists and conduct interviews with community residents. Most positions require a valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle. However, public transportation may be authorized in certain areas.

For a temporary, part time opportunity students will find the pay to be competitive with pay ranges from $10 to $22 depending on the region. Vehicle and related expenses will also be covered; workers will get paid weekly.

Hiring for the upcoming census will begin next month (February 2009). To apply, prospective workers are urged to call 1-866-861-2010 to schedule an appointment to take an employment test. Additional information about the census can be found online at www.census.gov/2010censusjobs.

Some final notes: Working as a census employee will allow you to help make sure that federal funds are distributed properly to help build roads, bridges, parks, housing and to ensure public safety. Your time as a census worker can also be included on your resume, giving you valuable work experience to show future employers.
