When it comes to college sports, lacrosse probably doesn’t get the attention that it deserves. Football, basketball and even ice hockey, baseball, and soccer are considered more newsworthy, but the game of lacrosse does have its followers, particularly amongst eastern US schools who are notable more for academic greatness than sporting prowess.

Johns Hopkins University’s reputation was built on medicine while Colgate University is often compared favorably with “the ivies,” but both schools field powerhouse programs for lacrosse. When the sixteen team NCAA Division 1 tournament was announced on Sunday, Colgate and Johns Hopkins were named to the elite field.

The tournament, which begins this Saturday, offers the following line up:

Saturday, May 10
Denver (10-6) at Maryland (9-5), noon
Loyola, Md. (7-6) at Duke (16-1), 2:30 p.m.
Ohio State (10-5) at Cornell (11-3), 5 p.m.
Navy (9-5) at North Carolina (8-5), 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 11
Colgate (11-5) at Notre Dame (13-2), noon
Hoftsra (10-5) at Johns Hopkins (8-5), 2:30 p.m.
Maryland-Baltimore County (12-3) at Virginia (12-3), 5 p.m.
Canisius (10-5) at Syracuse (12-2), 7:30 p.m.

Once the tournament reaches the semifinals, all games are played at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. The Division II and Division III tournaments will also be played there, making Men’s Lacrosse and Women’s Rowing the only NCAA sports where all the tournaments are held at one location.
