Spring Commencement Speakers Making Headlines

-------------------------------------

Last month, we shared who some of the commencement speakers will be at college graduation ceremonies this spring. We mentioned that the president has three ceremonies to attend while quite a few other headliners will also be speaking including Desmond Tutu, Bill Clinton, Laura Bush and Buzz Aldrin.

college graduationThat earlier list was only a sampling of some of the more notable speakers, therefore we’ve come up with a number of other personalities scheduled to appear in the weeks ahead including the following individuals:

Bud Selig — University of Wisconsin Madison graduate Bud Selig, who is Major League Baseball Commissioner, will be speaking at all four of the school’s graduation ceremonies later this month.

John Ashcroft — The former U.S. attorney general will be speaking at Truman State University in Missouri this Saturday.

Elie Wiesel — Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel will speak at Bucknell University’s graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 17th.

Lewis Katz — Graduates of the Penn State Dickinson School of Law will be hearing a school alumnus and New Jersey Net owner speak this Friday night. Katz also has donated $15 million to the law school.

Gwen Ifill — If you hadn’t heard of Ms. Ifill before last fall’s vice-presidential debate, then you most likely have seen her on “News Hour With Jim Lehrer,” a PBS show. Ifill will be the headliner for four commencement ceremonies over the coming weeks including Howard University, Marymount University, Simmons College and Georgetown College. Oh, by the way, Jim Lehrer will be making his soul commencement address at Oklahoma’s East Central University this Saturday.

Katie Couric — CBS’ anchorwoman will be speaking at Princeton University on June 1st while her former anchor mate, Matt Laurer, will be speaking at Harvard University on June 3rd.

As always, there are protests against certain speakers or gripes made about the cost of paying big name talent scheduled to appear at commencement exercises. Trust me, several years later you’ll be hard pressed to remember who spoke or, if you happen to recall the speaker, you’ll forget most of what they had to say.
