Common Exercise Mistakes To Avoid

Common Exercise Mistakes To Avoid
  • Opening Intro -

Exercising helps you maintain optimal health and gets your mind off homework and exams.

However, working out is no simple task, and you might hamper your own performance or even injure yourself.

-------------------------------------

Here’s a handful of common exercise mistakes to avoid.

Lifting Weights with Improper Posture

It may sound insignificant, but your posture can make or break your body while you’re weightlifting. Improper posture is a highway straight to injury, especially if you use free weights.

So, research how to position your head, shoulders, core, knees, and feet to best channel your strength and move your body. Each exercise is different, so know what to do for each cycle.

For example, if you do bicep curls with dumbbells, be sure to position your feet one in front of the other to protect your lower back.

If you squat with weights across your shoulders, set your stance and angle your hips so that you force all your momentum through your heels.

Failing To Prepare Your Body

If you don’t adequately prepare your body for your workout, you’ll likely have a difficult time starting off well.

Even if you don’t think you need to, stretch out your muscles a little bit before going on a run or picking up a weight. Warm-ups can do wonders for your performance and endurance.

Watch your food intake beforehand as well. No matter what the cafeteria is serving, if you eat too close to your workout time, you may become queasy while pushing too hard.

Conversely, if you eat too far before your workout, you could become lightheaded due to an empty stomach or lack of sugar.

The same goes for water—you ought to hydrate well before your workout. Otherwise, you could have leg cramps while cycling or lose steam quickly when running.

Avoiding Rest

You want to push yourself hard every time you hit the gym or go for a run, but you should also give your body consistent rest. If you overwork a certain part of your body, you could tear the muscles.

When you don’t rest muscle groups, they may not have time to reset and regroup before your next bout, decreasing the amount of muscle you gain. You should also take time to rest your entire body.

other valuable tips:

You may miss a day or two of working out if you’re studying for an exam or pulling an all-nighter to finish a paper, but you still need more consistent whole-day rests. Consider taking one day a week to let your body rest from intense workouts.

This doesn’t mean you have to be a couch potato—you can still play sports with friends or go for a walk, but you should be mindful of what your body tells you it needs, especially pertaining to rest and recovery.

Remember these common exercise mistakes to avoid the next time you hit the gym. With the right mindset and tactics, you can build muscle and stay in shape easily and safely.
