College Planning Checklist

If you are planning to go to college as a high school graduate, there are certain steps you need to take in order to get into the college of your choice. These steps have deadlines.

The College Planning Checklist summarizes these steps as follows:

  1. college prep: (completed in the junior HS year)
    complete an analysis of what you want from a college education. Review fields of study, see what is hot in job prospects, and complete a self-analysis on your tempermant for the career.

  2. college search: (completed in the junior/senior HS year)
    search for college and/or vocational school programs

  3. college admission: (completed in the senior HS year)
    get your application (with essays and recommendations) submitted to your selected colleges

  4. college financing: (completed in the senior HS year)
    submit information for college financial aid and scholarships

  5. college move: (after HS graduation)
    get yourself ready to move to college

Colleges, or higher education institutions are segmented into 5 categories. Use this search form to gather information from institutions that you search:

  1. Community / Junior Colleges:
    a small college offering 2-year Associate degrees. Many students attend local community colleges with the intent to transfer to a larger institution to further their education.

  2. Colleges:
    generally smaller in size. They offer 4-year degree programs (BA and BS) andmany 2-year Associate degrees.

  3. Universities:
    larger institutions with specialized degrees in business, engineering, pre-med,etc. They offer 2-year, 4-year, and many graduate and professional degrees.

  4. Vocational / Career Schools:
    specialized schools of training for specialized trade jobs suchas mechanics, computer technicians, medical assistants, etc. Programs may vary requiringonly a few weeks to complete while others may require a year or more. Upon completion, graduates will receive a license, certificate or an Associate Degree.
