Politicians and fans don’t always agree on everything, but in one area a consensus is emerging: the current post season arrangement for top tier college football teams – the Bowl Championship Series or BCS – is flawed. Moreover, both groups are clamoring for change with a political action committee or PAC recently formed to raise awareness as well as much needed funds.
Playoff PAC Surfaces
Playoff PAC describes itself as a federal political committee dedicated to establishing a competitive post-season championship for college football. The group contends that the current Bowl Championship Series is inherently flawed as it arbitrarily crowns a champion and has a quelling effect on inter-conference competition.
Moreover, Playoff PAC contends that fans, players, schools, and corporate sponsors would be better served if the BCS were to be replaced with an approachable playoff system that recognizes and rewards on-the-field accomplishment. To help bring that about, Playoff PAC has been established to elect pro-reform political candidates, marshal public reinforcement, and by providing a convergent focal point for pro-reform news, thinking, and education.
Orrin Hatch Opines
Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) had this to say about Playoff PAC: “I think I’ve made it clear that I believe the BCS to be fundamentally unfair. I’ve always hoped that the government would not have to get involved and that those with the power to reform the system would recognize the error of their ways. But, even after hearing the complaints of millions of college football fans, not to mention government officials, they are apparently unwilling to make any significant changes. That being case, I’m supportive of all reasonable efforts to ensure that students and schools are treated fairly and a national playoff system being advocated by Playoff PAC seems like a reasonable way to accomplish that goal.”
Some have criticized the political establishment for focusing on a playoff system when other more pressing matters are affecting our country. That hasn’t been lost on Bryson Morgan, a member of Playoff PAC’s Board of Directors, who said, “All of us recognize that our nation has weightier issues to tackle. However, this issue merits attention because college football’s reach extends beyond the playing field. Democratically elected leaders should devote attention to a national institution that is financially and culturally important to their constituents—particularly when BCS officials demonstrate repeated, willful deafness to public appeals for change. We look forward to working with candidates and officeholders to bring about an accessible playoff system that rewards on-the-field accomplishment.”
Follow The Blog
Playoff PAC launched a blog in September to help promote its causes, offering articles about playoff options as well as advocating for its cause. New articles are posted on Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the football season.
