Home Stretch Begins For College Football This Weekend

The final full month of college football is about to begin, though the argument can be made that for some schools, particularly Big Ten teams, the regular season will end on November 21st well before the end of the month. No matter, with teams having reached the two-third or three-quarter mark, there aren’t many games left in the season – every game matters!

Rivalry Action

college footballThis weekend’s action will include a number of rival contests with Kansas at Kansas State, Navy at Notre Dame, Duke at North Carolina, and Army at Air Force. The last time Navy played at Notre Dame they walked away with an upset. Though Navy is fielding a decent team, the Irish have their eyes set on a strong bowl bid and aren’t likely to allow the Midshipmen to spoil their season.

Other games of note include:

LSU at Alabama – Another SEC game, another contest that matters. #3 Alabama needs to win in order to play Florida for the SEC championship. That winner will likely play for the national championship, which means that the SEC would have four consecutive national title holders in a row. Don’t discount the #9 Tigers though – an upset would put them in the title hunt.

Ohio State at Penn State – At the beginning of the season I would have called this match up the Big Ten game of the year. Now, with Iowa on top, these two teams are playing for pride and a good spot in the bowl picture. Will this be Paterno’s final year at #11 Penn State? I doubt it: that’s something that has been uttered for the past fifteen seasons which means that #16 Ohio State won’t see the last of him.

Oklahoma at Nebraska – It wasn’t too long ago when these two teams were playing for the Big 12 (Big 8 ) championship. Now, they are both 5-3 and looking for some sort of accomplishment to hang their hats on. #24 Oklahoma has lost three games by a total of five points, which shows just how frustrating this season has been for the Sooners.

Next Week

Of course, it will be next weekend when the matches really heat up with Notre Dame playing at Pittsburgh, Utah at TCU, Iowa takes on Ohio State, Oregon at Arizona, and in a game that may surprisingly matter is Georgia Tech at Duke.

Yes, if the Blue Devils beat the Tarheels this weekend, then next week’s match with the Yellow Jackets could decide who represents the Coastal division in the ACC championship game. Duke?! Sounds crazy, but it is entirely possible – remember, this is the same Duke team which lost to 1-AA Richmond to start the season!
