Upsets Brighten College Football Picture

-------------------------------------

Florida, Alabama and Texas are the top three teams in college football, according to every poll out there. Should Florida and Alabama win out, they’ll do battle for the SEC championship next month for the right to face Texas for the national title in January. That is, if the Longhorns don’t get bitten by the upset bug which took down Iowa and Oregon last week.

college footballThere are still three other unbeaten teams who are making a case for national championship consideration — Cincinnati, TCU, and Boise State. Those schools, however, don’t have the depth of schedule of the top three schools and by nearly blowing its game against Connecticut last week, some are wondering if Cincinnati is ripe for a loss this weekend when West Virginia comes to town.

Among the games we’ll be keeping an eye on this weekend are the following:

South Florida at Rutgers – A #24 ranking may not be enough for the Bulls to defeat the Scarlet Knights, a team who drubbed South Florida in Tampa last year. Tom Savage has been stellar for Rutgers, but his team has yet to defeat a ranked opponent this year. Thursday night’s action in Piscataway will reveal much about where these two programs are heading.

West Virginia at Cincinnati – After narrowly escaping a loss at home to Connecticut, #5 Cincinnati must regroup or face defeat at the hands of the #25 Mountaineers. This Friday night contest may prove to be an epic battle as both teams are in the Big East title hunt.

Iowa at Ohio State – Losing to Northwestern last week crushed the #10 Hawkeyes national title hopes, but losing Ricky Stanzi may just have cost Iowa a trip to the Rose Bowl. #11 Ohio State is surging, having vanquished Penn State last weekend in Happy Valley. Saturday afternoon action worth following!

Utah at TCU – The Mountain West Conference title is on the line with #4 TCU still believing that it has a hot to play for the national championship in January. #16 Utah wants to remind everyone that last year was no fluke and can do that by knocking off the Horned Frogs on Saturday night.

Notre Dame at Pittsburgh – I mentioned earlier this week that Coach Charlie Weis will be given his walking paper by the Fighting Irish thanks to his second loss in three years to Navy. #12 Pittsburgh is looking to move up in the polls and can get into a BCS game by winning out its schedule, beginning with a home win Saturday night.

Oh, just in case you haven’t seen it yet, USA Today published a searchable database earlier this week of coaches salaries for the 120 1-A (FBS) teams. What an eye opener it is!
