Pioneering program tailored for attorneys serving small business owners.

The Concord Law School of Kaplan University announced this week the launching of its online Small Business Practice LLM (Master of Laws) program, the first in the nation focused exclusively on legal issues facing small businesses.

gavel“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, generating more than 65 percent of jobs created in the last 15 years,” said M. Ellen Murphy, Concord Law School’s Small Business Practice LLM program director. “The Small Business Practice LLM offers practical, integrated training designed to expand the reach and quality of legal services for small businesses, which make up more than 90 percent of US companies.”

Program Design

According to school officials, the part-time Concord program will be taught jointly by an academician and a legal practice expert. The program was designed by a team of law professors and practitioners for practicing attorneys and recent law graduates who want to further their knowledge of the distinct legal issues consistently encountered by entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Traditional law school programs usually focus on the needs of corporations and involve huge transactions. The Concord program will equip attorneys to deal with issues facing small businesses such as mall lease agreements, using personal or family resources to fund the business, Internet business planning, small business succession and more.

Legal Care

“The online Small Business Practice LLM offers a legal education in a format that is accessible, affordable, flexible and practical. It will prepare attorneys to provide “legal care” for the astounding number of small business owners in our country,” said Rosalind Mouser, Concord Law School LLM Advisory Board Member, Immediate Past President of the Arkansas Bar Association, and 25-year small business practitioner.

The Concord School of Law is the first online law school to be associated with a regionally accredited university. Concord offers JD and EJD degrees and currently has 1500 students enrolled and now counts more than 1000 alumni.
