  • Opening Intro -

The opportunities for college education have advanced over the years, opening doors to many of our disadvantaged and disabled individuals.

Since the enactment of the 1975 law known as IDEA or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the future of the 40 million handicapped Americans were given a new lease on life and an equal chance for education and employment.

The IDEA law has allowed institutions and organizations to fund financial grants for college targeted at helping this displaced sector of our society.

A plethora of educational institutions and private organizations along with the government and state initiated grants have significantly increased the number of mentally and physically disabled who are able to enter campuses across the nation. Similar to minority grants, this financial aid hopes to also create awareness on the abilities of the handicapped members of our society while giving them the opportunity to grow that they deserve. Here is a rundown on the most renowned and trusted resources available for those with disabilities to explore in the hopes of acquiring educational financial assistance.

Grants Through Specific Organizations

As the IDEA law disallows setting up restrictions to discriminate the disabled from the rest, a number of organizations have risen as staunch supporters for this cause.

National Federation for the Blind – respected for their many efforts in putting blind students through college

Jewish Guild for the Blind – financial assistance readily given to undergraduate minorities

National Association of the Deaf – facilitates grants for graduate studies of those with physical handicaps.

Grants Through Colleges and Universities

A number of our country’s most reputable educational institutions are strengthening their financial programs and offering new grants for college for this marginalized sector of our society by providing them with both financial aid and technical support to allow them to freely participate in class. Technological innovations have also set forth ways of supporting these students by way of video conferences and mechanical supports to make their college life much more comfortable.

George Washington University – has set up a financial assistance contributions facility for the disabled members of their university.

Gallaudet University – a revered institution for the deaf and hearing impaired that also offers financial aid to its disadvantaged members.

George Mason University –  has successfully embarked on a disability resource center to enable those with disabilities to conduct research and application request for student financial grants as well as scholarships.

The value of education transcends age, gender and disabilities and with the assistance being provided by financial grants, more members of our society are looking into a brighter and more secured future.
