One of the proudest moments a person can have in his life is his college graduation. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics Website, for school year 2013-2014, the rate of public high school graduates increased from 81 percent to 82+ percent for the said school year.
Unfortunately, increasing number of high school graduates doesn’t mean increasing percentage of college graduates. The numbers recently released by The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center suggests an alarming decrease in college enrollees. It should be noted also that not all of these enrollees graduate, as some of them quit halfway through.
Why the decrease in college enrollees and graduates?
Decrease in college enrollees boils down to several reasons. Many high school graduates go straight to find jobs, thinking that college degrees are just a waste of money.
Some just don’t have enough financial capacity to enroll and are left with no choice but to find a job. It’s quite obvious that the cost of a college degree is increasing year by year.
With the rise of social media and the freelancing economy, many high school graduates also resort to making money using media platforms. Since there are lots of opportunities online, sometimes they settle with the funds they get and refuse to pursue higher education.
It’s also undeniable that there are some who simply have no interest in pursuing college degrees because of the additional student responsibility in studying and research.
However, for the percentage of the population that was able to enroll, there’s still no guarantee that 100 percent of them will graduate. Some of them will quit halfway for financial reasons. Some will quit because they can no longer bear their responsibilities as students.
Why College is important.
Though there are lots of famous people that became successful without getting a college degree, finishing higher education is important in general. For a start, a college diploma serves as leverage to jump-start your career and promotion. College graduates in general land jobs that offer better compensation.
College serves as a training ground. It’s in college where you learn the basics and theories you need once you go out and work in your chosen field. It’s very important that you prepare and equip yourself with enough knowledge that you can use once you are out there.
What you can do.
If you are a high school graduate contemplating whether to go for that degree, JUST DO IT!!! A college diploma is not just a mere paper. It is a treasure. It symbolizes excellence and knowledge. It can take you anywhere.
If it’s your finances that’s keeping you from doing so, there are a lot of scholarships you can apply for. The government is doing its best to help deserving students get through it. If there’s a will, there’s definitely a way.
For the college students who are thinking of quitting, DON’T. It will be one of your greatest regrets. Just keep on moving forward, go for a part time job, apply for a scholarship, ask for help… Just don’t give up. Once this is over you’ll look back and you’ll be filled with pride that you didn’t give up and kept pushing on. It will forever boost your self-esteem that in your lowest moment you refused to give up. Rest if you must buddy, but don’t you ever quit.
For college alumni, you know what it’s like in college. So don’t turn a deaf ear to those college students you know. You should offer your help every now and then.
Help doesn’t always come in the form of money. In its simplest form, it can be a word of encouragement, or simply your friendly presence.
Never underestimate your influence to the younger generation. Guide them, motivate them, help them. Once in your college life you were once helped by many people; it’s now your turn to give back.
And to you reading this, help us in spreading awareness about the importance of college. Go out, help, inspire and spread the word.
