How To Survive Your Freshman Year in 5 Easy Steps

How To Survive Your Freshman Year in 5 Easy Steps
  • Opening Intro -

For many, the freshman year is an exciting opportunity full of possibility, opportunity and the chance to create a memorable college experience.

Your academic record is clean, you have quite a lot of independence and the resources to establish a direction for your social and academic life.

Honestly, your achievements or lack thereof in high school do not matter much as you enter college. That’s because they are rarely transferable.

However, if you have some skills which you fostered in high school, you can hone them in college. Therefore, it pays to know how to navigate your first year in college.

Here is a guideline on how to survive your freshman year.

1. Attend all orientation sessions

Campus orientation sessions help you to understand the lay of the land in your new college. They cover the academic, social, sports, societies and volunteer landscapes.

Provided by an instructor or a senior student, orientation helps you to grasp how to navigate the red tape in your college. As such, as a freshman, do not miss out on any of the orientation tours. Attend all of them so as to create a firm foundation for your college life.

2. Socialize and get to know your roommate

The people that you live with in your freshman year are your main safety net. They are going through the same experiences and emotions as you are. In most cases, you get to share these life experiences together until you graduate.

Therefore, get social and know them. Learn their majors, hobbies and campus interests. By doing that, you will create a social circle who you can depend on for academic experience and social support.

3. Organize yourself

The biggest difference between college and high school is that the lecturers post all the assignments for the semester and expect you to prepare yourself for them. Unlike high school, they will not follow up on you to see if you did the work. If you fail to post an assignment, you negatively affect your overall grade.

Therefore, learn how to organize your academic life. Invest in an organizer or a big wall calendar which you can mark so as to stay aware of deadlines and more.

4. Find a comfortable study spot

Everyone has a specific spot where they like to study. Find one in your freshman year and maintain it throughout the rest of your life in college. Examples of ideal places of study include a corner of the library or your dorm room. Note that this spot should have as few distractions as possible.

5. Attend your classes

In college, you have the freedom to skip classes if you are under the weather or are unable to make it. Every course has an attendance percentage which you should honor so as to complete it successfully. Make sure that you attend all your classes. If you really can’t make it, contact your lecturer so as to inform them beforehand.

College can be a very exciting and fruitful part of your life. If you start it right, you can maintain a positive momentum for your time there. The guidelines above can help you to achieve this.
