Once you get a few semesters under your belt, of course, things will start to fall into a rhythm of class, work, eat, sleep, panic-because-the-deadline-is-upon-us… you get the picture.
But freshmen don’t have the luxury of hindsight, so with that in mind here are some things worth knowing if you’re new to the world of crippling student loan debt *ahem* I mean higher education!
Do: Make Friends (but not too many)
College can be really isolating for a lot of people. Most of us spent four years or more getting to know the friends we ultimately walked across the stage to receive our high school diplomas with, only to wave them goodbye as they go off to their own things and leave you alone in a new educational experience.
I think the advice to make friends goes without saying, as they can help keep you grounded when you really feel out of your element. That being said, though, try not to spend so much time with friends that your grades start to suffer. Remember, you’re paying a mind-numbingly huge amount of money for the classes, not the friends. Strike a balance.
Don’t: Buy Your Textbooks From the Bookstore
Seriously, don’t do it. I know you’ve heard a thousand times about how you need to shop around for your textbooks, but you’re gonna hear it a thousand more times. I think you’ll hear it loudest when it comes time to pay for the books and all of a sudden you’re reconsidering the entire concept of college as you tearfully hand over your hard-earned cash.
Right now Chegg.com is one of the best places to find used textbooks for rent and honestly? You’re wasting money if you don’t shop smart for textbooks. Nothing is more infuriating than paying $125 for a textbook only for the professor to hardly use it, so do yourself a favor and shop smart: you’ll only waste maybe $50 instead of a whole $125.
Do: Support Your Team!
Some of the most fun to be had in college is at the sporting events. Football is a given, but you’d be hard pressed to have a bad time at a hockey game either. You’ll win some, you’ll lose some, but when your graduation looms you’ll always have those memories of watching your team get absolutely demolished or making the big play. It’s all a part of the college experience. Just be sure to make responsible choices (you know what I mean).
Don’t: Waste a Second of it
We’re only going to be here for so long. Some of us may take longer than others (and there’s nothing wrong with that, I’m staring down the barrel of a fifth year myself) but ultimately we all hope to one day hold in hand the piece of paper that’ll make us somewhat employable.
It’ll be the end of an era for us all, so remember to spend your time in college making as many memories as you can because – among other reasons – memories are free. You’ll learn pretty quick in college to jump at the word “free.”
College is a different experience for everyone, but I can say without a doubt that college is an experience that can change you into someone you never thought you could be. If you make the most of it, keeping in mind some of the things above, you’ll be on the right track to remembering college as some of the best years of your life.
