If the idea of visiting Norway attracts you, you can experience an unforgettable adventure. This Scandinavian country has (almost) everything you need for a memorable vacation, whether you are an active or passive tourist.

There are beautiful and diverse landscapes, phenomenal fjords for cruising and fishing, beautiful towns, ski resorts for winter sports lovers, and much more.

You should explore Norway before you go and find destinations to include in your itinerary. Ålesund is one of Norway’s towns worthy of your attention.

It’s small and not famous among tourists, but it has so much to offer. You can go there for a few days and then continue towards the nearby fjords.

Although public transport in Norway is quite good, this adventure would cost you a lot of time and money. That is why car rental is a much better, faster, and more comfortable option for touring Norway and its towns.

And if you plan a road trip in Norway, you must obey their traffic rules.

On the next page, find out why car rental in Ålesund is better than a taxi or public transportation:

Tolls

In Norway, main roads, tunnels, and bridges have toll booths. Larger cities like Oslo and Trondheim have tolls even for entering them.

You pay toll in two ways. The first is taking the AutoPass device (tag) that most rental companies have in their vehicles. This device allows you to automatically pass through the toll ramps without stopping because the billing is recorded and conducted electronically.

If you don’t have an AutoPASS device, you should choose toll stations marked as ‘Mynt’ or ‘Manuell.’ You pay the operator or the ticket machine.

You can pay by credit or debit card at most toll booths, but the dollar exchange rate to NOK is not favorable. So always have enough cash with you.

Speed Limits

Norwegians don’t drive fast, which is not a common thing for most foreign tourists. As a result, they usually go at higher speeds than allowed. And when drivers are not respectful of speed limits, they make the roads unsafe.

The maximum allowed speed on Norwegian roads is 90 km/h at highways. Depending on how dense they’re populated, residential areas of Ålesund are limited to 30-50 km/h. Overtaking is only possible from the left, even on highways.

Lights On

While driving along the Ålesund area, the lights on your car must be on all the time. The rear lights are not always required, only through tunnels and low-light conditions.

You can use fog lights instead of regular dipped lights during the day. You should always have a kit of spare bulbs in your car just in case. See here how to change car light in a few simple steps.

Right of Way

Follow the right-hand rule when driving in Norway, but keep in mind that some traffic participants have a prioritized right of way. These are pedestrians (at marked crossings) and trams in their rails.

Emergency services vehicles are also at an advantage. If you spot them while their rotation is on, be sure to move the car on the side lane until they pass.

No Alcohol

Driving in Norway is often risky, even for seasoned drivers. Weather is often unfavorable and can change road conditions in minutes. So being behind the wheel requires your full attention and soberness. That’s why traffic rules regarding driving under the influence are strict.

There’s a limit of 0.2 alcohol per mille of blood for drivers, and driving under the influence of drugs is not permitted. It’s a low limit, so one large beer can help you hit it in no time. If you drive drunk in Norway, you’ll be fined with a large fine and may even be imprisoned.

Despite opiates, you shouldn’t use your phone while driving either. If you need to navigate your trip, get a hands-free device and Bluetooth speakerphone, or simply rent a GPS device along with the vehicle.

Most Ålesund car hires offer these features, but inquire if they’re included in a rental price or charged extra.

And while self-driving provides you with many benefits, it can be challenging in countries like Norway. Although the roads are of good quality, the weather conditions are often not the most favorable for driving.

That is why it’s imperative to respect the law and traffic regulations not to endanger yourself and others.
