College Bowl Games, By The Numbers

-------------------------------------

I missed seeing that 6-6 Notre Dame was invited to the Aloha state to face Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, remembering that in times past when the Irish finished 6-5 they declined bowl offers. Looks as if someone wanted to spend Christmas in Hawaii, hence the acceptance.

The first games of this near three week “bowl season” will be played on Saturday college footballwith the finale being the January 8th FedEx BCS National Championship Game between Florida and Oklahoma. The names of most of the bowl games are forgettable, so I’ve grouped the games by date with my score and comments following.

Starting with the inaugural EagleBank Bowl in Washington, DC, here are my predictions:

December 20th

Wake Forest 21, Navy 17 – Back to back shut outs for Navy will come to an end with the Demon Deacons having revenge on their minds.

Fresno State 31, Colorado State 20 – I thought Fresno had a better team earlier in this season, they seemed to fade later on.

South Florida 34, Memphis 30 – The Bulls might lose this one if their injuries come back to haunt them.

BYU 30, Arizona 28 – Too close to call!

December 21st

Southern Miss 35, Troy 17 – Yawn.

December 23rd

Boise State 38, TCU 28 – The best of the early season bowl games.

December 24th

Hawaii 27, Notre Dame 23 – The Irish should have stayed home.

December 26th

Central Michigan 41, Florida Atlantic 38 – I hate predicting games involving teams I know nothing about.

December 27th

West Virginia 23, North Carolina 20 – The Mountaineers will lose this one if they fade at the end.

Florida State 45, Wisconsin 27 – Not much there.

California 30, Miami 10 – I don’t have a good feeling about this game for the Hurricanes.

December 28th

Louisiana Tech 33, Northern Illinois 21 – Yawn.

December 29th

Rutgers 35, North Carolina State 23 – Teel goes out a big winner and awaits the NFL draft.

Missouri 51, Northwestern 31 – Don’t play a Big 12 team unless your defense is top notch.

December 30th

Maryland 44, Nevada 17 – These two teams don’t belong on the same field.

Rice 38, Western Michigan 21 – Cook ’em, Rice!

Oklahoma State 44, Oregon 33 – A good game.

December 31st

Houston 28, Air Force 21 – No comment.

Oregon State 37, Pittsburgh 20 – I don’t expect the Panthers to play particularly well in this game.

Boston College 30, Vanderbilt 17 – Vandy faded after a fine start, while BC held their own throughout the season.

Kansas 44, Minnesota 21 — The Gophers simply won’t be able to keep up in this one.

Georgia Tech 27, LSU 24 – Anyone else disappointed in the Tigers this year?

January 1st

South Carolina 27, Iowa 20 — Could be the closest game this bowl season.

Georgia 34, Michigan State 24 — The Spartans are good, but not good enough.

Clemson 35, Nebraska 33 — The Tigers lose if they let the Cornhuskers play four quarters of Big 12 ball.

USC 31, Penn State 21 — Paterno comes up short in this one.

Virginia Tech 23, Cincinnati 20 — Last minute field goal wins it.

January 2nd

Texas Tech 55, Ole Miss 30 — Fireworks, if you like them.

East Carolina 27, Kentucky 17 — ECU is another team that I think played below their abilities this year.

Alabama 38, Utah 20 — Pity that Utah is facing the Tide after Alabama lost their first game of the season, otherwise I would give the Utes a chance.

January 3rd

Connecticut 30, Buffalo 24 – This game could go either way.

January 5th

Texas 45, Ohio State 35 – Lots of scoring, but the Buckeyes cannot keep up.

January 6th

Tulsa 48, Ball State 28 – Ball State was never “for real” this season.

January 8th

Oklahoma 45, Florida 38 – Tebow out performs Bradford but still loses.

If I finish at least 17-17, then give me some credit. Bowl games aren’t easy to predict, especially when teams have weeks to prepare. Enjoy the games – most are available for viewing on ESPN.
