Collegians who are seeking to transfer from one college or university to another one, sometimes encounter difficulties including the loss of college credits. A class with a similar name at one school may not be an exact fit elsewhere, meaning those credits may not transfer. Nontransferable credits mean that the student will have to take additional classes at his new school, driving up overall costs and extending the time it’ll take to complete his degree.
North Carolina Program Stands Tall
In one state, North Carolina, progress is being made to help students successfully transfer from one school to the next, keeping as many credits as they can in the process. The College Foundation of North Carolina’s (CFNC) Student Transfer Navigator went online this past April and is proving to be a helpful tool to transfer seeking students.
According to the CFNC, the system currently contains more than 8,000 course equivalences from the 58 NC Community Colleges (NCCCS) to the 16 UNC constituent institutions (UNC). Additional course equivalence information between NC Community Colleges and NC Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU), UNC constituent institutions, NCICU institutions, and between UNC and NCICU institutions are planned to be available to students in late 2009. Thus, in the very near future students may find it easier to transfer between most any North Carolina educational institution.
A Helpful Tool For Transferring College Students
The way that the system works is that collegians can compare course equivalence information for planned or taken courses for up to two institutions at a time in three easy steps by building their academic history, confirming their academic history, and viewing their Transfer Equivalence Report. This unique and powerful tool allows students and parents to view multiple scenarios for possible transfer at will. Student Transfer Navigator is accessible on www.cfnc.org by clicking on “Transfer Student Planner” link.
Funding for the Student Transfer Navigator comes from a U.S. Department of Education Grant Program, which provided $3.8 million over a two year period to launch, expand and maintain the tool. Besides featuring course equivalence information, links to online admissions applications, degree audit, and electronic transcripts access will be available to students by project completion in 2011. The system is the result of a collaborative partnership effort between UNC, NCICU, NCCCS, N.C. State Education Assistance Authority, College Foundation, Inc., and Decision Academic Inc.
