NCAA College World Series Teams Announced

Road to Omaha 2010 is Announced

Duke University won the men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse tournaments this year, but they won’t be headed for the Division I College World Series. However, if I were a betting man, I would wager that a team from the PAC 10 Conference will finish atop the 64 team field, given that eight teams from that conference are in the tournament.

Pity USC and Washington, the only PAC 10 schools to miss post season play.

baseballThis weekend the double elimination Regionals will begin with sixteen top seeded teams playing host for the right to advance to the Super Regionals leading to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. By June 29, but no later than June 30 a champion will be crowned, though choosing a winner won’t be so easy as figuring which PAC 10 team is the strongest.

Competitive Field

Yes, there is a lot of strength in college baseball this year with recognized powerhouses Miami (FL), Texas and Georgia Tech back once again while Coastal Carolina (51-7), a small school with a strong program, will also contend.

Several schools are outright or de facto hosts, based on their work this year. For example, Louisville’s tournament is at Louisville, South Carolina will play in Columbia, Miami plays in Coral Gables, Arizona State in Tempe and Coastal Carolina will enjoy Myrtle Beach. The lone exception is Florida State who travels to Connecticut for their games.

The remaining top qualifiers are: Texas, TCU, UCLA, CS Fullerton, Florida, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma and Virginia.

Omaha Bound

Once the Regionals are over, winning teams will advance to the Super Regionals and face off against the champion of another regional. The first team to win two games moves on to Omaha. Eight teams will play in one of two double elimination brackets with the bracket winners vying for it all in a best of three championship game.
