The education you need to become an automotive service technician.

Many technicians have a high school diploma or a GED, but most have received advanced training at college or a technical school, enabling them to acquire the skills needed to command higher wages. If you are seeking work as an automotive technician, the job outlook is a good one with the BLS projecting 311,700 job openings through 2020, up by approximately 88,000 jobs. Notes — This school has 10 campuses coast to coast and offers courses in automotive, motorcycle, marine, diesel and collision repair. UTI is also the exclusive educational provider for NASCAR, offering NASCAR technician training at its Charlotte campus. The school’s Automotive Training program lasts 51 weeks and prepares students for ASE Certification. The school says that 81 percent of its students go on to find work including as automotive service technicians.

Notes — Lincoln Tech has 23 campuses with most located in the northeast and two in Florida. This offers courses in automotive, collision repair and diesel, providing a degree or certification in several areas including electrical systems, drivability diagnostics and powertrains. Lincoln claims an 80 percent placement rate for grads of its automotive technology program.

Notes — This Virginia school offers programs in automotive technology, diesel/heavy vehicle, among others. Its automotive technology program offers comprehensive training covering every system of the car. The school offers degrees and certification leading to jobs as automotive service technicians, automotive specialty technicians, master mechanics and electronics. ATI claims an 85 percent placement rate for students that finish its program.

Notes — Like so many of our nation’s community colleges, the Houston Community College system offers an automotive training program. Its Automotive Technology Training Center is located at its Northeast campus and offers AAS degrees and certificates that prepare students for careers as diesel engine technicians, automotive technicians, collision repair technicians and other positions. In addition to tuition, students are required to purchase tools and books. However, with tuition averaging about $68 per class hour, the costs of a public education are much lower than what you would find at a private school.
