Your particular degree is important, but a potential employer may want to examine your college transcripts to determine if you are a good fit for a job or not. Obtaining these documents is easier these days than ever before as most colleges allow you to get what you need right online.
1. Visit your college’s website. Get online and navigate your browser to your college or university website. Look along the top of the website for a navigation bar and find the section for Alumni. Click on Alumni and locate its transcript section. Use the college’s “search” function if the information is not readily listed.
2. Choose your transcripts. Colleges may offer both unofficial and official transcripts to current students and alumni. Choose the official transcript, documentation that is printed on official college paper, signed by an official with the registrar’s office and is embossed with the school’s seal.
3. Provide your personal information. Your college or university may handle this step differently from our instructions. Nevertheless, before you can receive your official transcripts, you may need to provide the last four digits of your Social Security Number or your student identification number along with your user name to process your request.
4. Review your transcripts. Before placing an order for your official transcripts, you may be able to review your unofficial transcripts online. Take this step if you want to confirm what your official transcripts will show. An employer may welcome your unofficial transcripts if time is of the essence.
5. Place your order. Fill out the form requesting release of your official college transcripts. You can have these documents sent directly to your home or to a third-party, such as a potential employer. Consider having two copies issued — one to you and the other to the requested party. Keep your copy in a safe location.
Transcript Notes
Expect that your official transcripts will take at least a week to arrive. This process may take longer during busy times such as at the beginning of the semester when students begin to arrive on campus. Once you receive your documents, verify that the information is correct. Notify the college if an error has been detected or if the information sent is incomplete or missing.
