What to Take and What to Leave: How to Prepare for University
  • Opening Intro -

Moving away to university is an exciting step to take, but it can also be a little bit overwhelming.

For instance, there’s the dilemma of what you should take with you and what you should leave behind.

-------------------------------------

You might bring too many of your belongings with you or too few, and you want to avoid either, really. In order to prevent any unnecessary stress and make your move easier, we compiled some tips for you.

Bring basics

The very first thing you should do to make the move easier on yourself is find out what your new dorm or apartment offers. In a lot of cases there will be furniture, bedding and some basic kitchenware at the ready in your new place. If this is not the case, find out which valuable things you can bring from home such as linen, cutlery and detergents. But don’t overdo it and choose the objects you want to bring wisely: you can always purchase some of it in your new neighbourhood.

Prioritize your possessions

What are your most prized possessions? Look around in your room and pick a handful of objects that make you feel at home, such as posters, pictures and suchlike. Nothing helps you settle down faster than having familiar and loved objects around you.

Select your favourites

If you own books, movies or records then you might want to bring some of them to your new place of residence. Limit yourself to taking one box, however: university residence is often temporary and you don’t want to move your stuff back to your family’s place every summer. Don’t forget to create a separate box for all of your academic needs i.e. the books you’ve already purchased, writing utensils, binders and the like.

Sort out your clothes

Go through your clothes and get rid of the items you never wear or no longer like and simply bring the rest.

Get rid of the things you don’t need

When you’re going through your belongings you will probably come across some stuff that you don’t use and/or need anymore. If you’re ready to part with them, why not try and make some money off them? The easiest way to sell your items is through online platforms like Music Magpie, a place where you will earn easy money in return for your old CDs, DVDs and games. Then you can invest the money you make in items you want to buy for your new place!
