The University of South Carolina basketball team under Frank Martin has made a ton of progress this season. There are some prognosticators that definitely believe that the Gamecocks can finish near the top of the SEC Standings. Their current record is 14-0. You can already see them landing key wins against the likes of Auburn on the road. Those kind of road tests are very important within the SEC.

Laimonas Chatkevicius is one of the seniors that is leading the Gamecocks during a season where they can see that some of their competition like the Florida Gators and Tennessee Vols are definitely struggling.

The Kentucky Wildcats, on the other hand are almost ready to reload. Consistency on the defensive glass, led by Miguel Carrera is going to make all of the difference. PJ Dozier is a promising, penetrating young guard that has a ton of potential, but he currently tends to turn the ball over a little too much. The hope is that the South Carolina coaching staff will be patient with him.

Changes

You are seeing Marcus Lee really have a coming out party for the Kentucky Wildcats. It is difficult to get consistent playing time when you are competing for that time against the likes of Julius Randle.

Randle is one of the skilled big guys that came into the SEC and made a huge impact, right away. John Calipari knows how to find those kind of players. Calipari does not appear to have a floor general on this current roster like Andrew Harrison this year, this may be why you are seeing losses to teams like the LSU Tigers.

Ups & Downs

You are going to find that Kevin Stallings and the Vanderbilt Commodores are going to be able to benefit from their consistent three point shooting, but the team can also go through a fair number of droughts as well. The interesting thing about the Commodores is that one game, they can score 104 points and the next game they may struggle to get to 54. You do see some fairly consistent play from Vanderbilt at home.

Traps

LSU basketball is going to be dominated by all of the talk about the skill set associated with a superstar like Ben Simmons. The truth of the matter is that many people out there are going to see Simmons and think this is the guy that can lead the right crew to an NCAA Championship, but there are some nights when LSU looks like an NIT Team, it is because they don’t play consistent team defense. You will certainly see this team stand out around too much, this can make a difference against a team that plays great on the ball defense.

Is LSU experienced enough to handle the traps that an Arkansas team may throw their way? These are all questions that have to be answered during SEC basketball season.
