Perspective of a college friend of mine:

College, the trickiest yet most interesting time in a young adults life. All alumni, and current students, can testify that the few years you spend in college are the most interesting times in your life until that point.

Depending on your upbringing, you may walk into university either amped up to study or craving the legendary parties. Some come for the sports while others see it as their first chance to really take a shot at love. This combination of both ignorant and smug students is what college is all about; a bunch of kids who know nothing yet believe they know it all.

In this post, I will attempt to highlight the things to look forward to for any upcoming freshmen so as to prepare you for what is to come; any older readers can read on and flash back to a simpler time with minimal responsibility where nothing mattered apart from self discovery.

Parties

As a high school graduate, you may have heard, either from your older brother or that R rated movie you streamed on your computer, that college is one big party.

Trust me, its true. If partying is what you want, you will most definitely find what you are looking for.

Odd invitations to random student housing blocks filled with cheap, but potent, liquor are bound to come your way and my advice is to enjoy the hell out of it. Take it from someone who wasted their freshman year in the library on weekends, a little partying will not kill you, especially in your first year when the workload is trivial. Live a little and have some stories to share with your friends over the holidays; its totally worth it.

College Sports

When it comes to college sports, I would advise that if you are good, join your preferred sport and give it your all.

Unlike high school, college sports is serious business with nation wide appeal and tournaments that could get you scouted, and recruited into respective leagues.

Whether its basketball, swimming or football, get a feel of working with others to achieve a common goal. It not only helps keep your fitness up, but is also a really good way to make friends who could be part of your inner circle for years to come.

If, like me, you are useless at any physical activity, make sure you attend the games; they are massive spectacles that you do not want to miss out on.

Love and Relationships

Love and relationships are also key experiences for any college students. How you navigate having a girlfriend, or a crush, can determine your social standing amongst your peers.

My advice is don’t be the person who spends all your time with your girlfriend/boyfriend, leaving no time for your friends. This might make your single friends abandon you; then once you break up, what next?

Not that I am against love, but in college, be very smart about how you work your relationships.

All in all, college is a fun place and you should be excited to join whatever campus you are admitted to. I know it may seem daunting; probably going many miles away from the comfort of your parent’s home to live amongst complete strangers, but trust me it will be fine.

For all the alumni or older college students, lets work to dispel the fear that comes with joining college by advising our younger siblings and friends on the various intricacies that come with the new experience. In fact, share this post on Facebook, Twitter and basically everywhere so that all high school graduates can get an idea that college is not difficult; in fact it’s quite fun.
