College is a time of new experiences and adventures. T

here is no better time in your life to take off and see the world, and with new friends and new freedoms, weekend road trips let you share these experiences with others.

The biggest hurdle you have to overcome when planning a trip is the fact that as college students, you probably don’t have a lot of money to splurge on a vacation. Here are some budget-friendly tips for planning a road trip as a student.

Take Advantage of Your Student ID

Many entertainment venues offer student pricing, which can save you plenty while you’re on the road. Even some restaurants offer student discounts. If it isn’t advertised, you can also ask when you arrive if there is a discount available. StudentUniverse is a site that does the work for you and allows you to search for deals that are specifically geared towards students.

Share the Journey

Remember that with each person you can add to the car, your individual cost will go down. Maybe you’ve been planning this trip with a specific group of friends for a while, but if not, consider advertising for traveling companions.

There may be someone out there who is itching to hit the road but is also too broke to travel. If you can find a way to split the cost between several people, you can stretch your budget even further.

Look for Free Activities

You don’t have to spend money to have a good time. There are plenty of parks, museums, beaches, and botanical gardens out there that don’t charge admission—or ask for a minimal donation. Spend some time researching the route you will be traveling to see if there are any fun and free activities along the way to break things up.

Get Creative with Lodging

Don’t spend money on hotel rooms; they’re just too expensive. Instead consider getting a room through a sharing site like Airbnb or research hostels along your route. Consider house-sitting or house swapping sites, that allow you to trade spaces with someone. If the weather is nice, bring a tent and find a place to camp out with your friends. There are plenty of low-cost and free options when looking for a place to rest your head for a night or two.

Watch Your Transportation Expenses

You should always start your trip with gas prices in mind. If you have access to a fuel-efficient vehicle, choose it. Of course, if you have access to a vehicle that can seat more travelers, it might be worth it to take a larger vehicle if you can split the fuel cost between more friends.

You can also look at using public transportation once you reach your destination; it can be much safer than trying to navigate a strange city on your own, and many cities offer student pricing on transportation. Find a parking space on a community sharing site and buy a bus pass. It can also be safer if you plan on consuming any alcohol on your trip.

Let Technology Be Your Guide

Don’t forget that there’s an app out there for almost everything. You can use an app on your phone to find affordable restaurants, entertainment venues, cheap gas stations, and many other useful things on a road trip. GPS navigation can help you shave hours off your trip and point you to the nearest rest-stops along the way, so you don’t get too off course when you need to stop.

Taking a fun and adventurous vacation doesn’t need to be limited by the amount of money in your bank account. Take some friends along and plan your trip ahead of time to make the most of these money-saving tips.
