Part of this includes having essential amenities that can make campus life easier and more enjoyable. Most colleges offer the basics, such as on-campus housing and dining options. Below are details of a few extra amenities every college should offer students to enhance their overall student experience.
Private Study Spaces
While students living on campus can retreat to their dorms or the library to study, these environments are still shared spaces that can come with distractions. Consider adding private study rooms that students can reserve for individual use.
Often, private study spaces come equipped with desks, chairs, whiteboards, and other study essentials to aid in academic success. Some schools also offer rooms in several sizes for single-use or multiple students; a group may reserve the space to work on a project. These spaces allow students to focus without distractions, increasing productivity and allowing for more efficient study sessions.
Campus Gym
Going to college and living on campus may mean changing your lifestyle and routines, including your fitness habits. A campus gym allows students to stay active without leaving their school grounds. This is especially helpful for students who may not have access to transportation to get off-campus or those with busy schedules who can’t commit time for long commutes.
When creating an on-campus gym, carefully consider which machines you add to the facility. Ideally, cardio and weight-lifting equipment should be used to appeal to all students. For example, some of the top cardio machines to have in your gym include treadmills, rowing machines, and stationary bikes. Also, evaluate the sub-categories of each type of equipment; if you add stationary bikes, decide whether upright, recumbent, or both best fit your student’s needs.
Indoor and Outdoor Hangouts
Although we attend college to study and earn a degree, it’s also a time to form new friendships and build social networks. Schools should provide students ample spaces to hang out and relax with friends indoors and outdoors throughout the year. This can include common areas with comfortable seating and outdoor spaces with picnic tables, benches, and greenery.
Having a variety of hangout spots allows students to choose one that best fits their mood or activity. Some may prefer quiet indoor lounges for studying or reading, while others may enjoy outdoor spaces for sports and games. A well-designed campus should provide options for all types of socializing.
Mental Health Support
College can be a challenging time for many students, with academic pressure, social changes, and adjusting to living away from home all contributing to stress and anxiety. Offering various avenues for mental health support is an essential amenity every college should have since it directly impacts student well-being. Examples of mental health support for students can include counseling services, support groups, and workshops for stress management and coping mechanisms.
Regardless of which specific amenities you offer, it’s important to consider the overall student experience when using them. Monitor and gather student feedback on how they use each amenity, what improvements or additions they suggest, and whether any amenities are underutilized.
