What Are the Most Useful Off-to-College Gifts?
  • Opening Intro -

Many people start making college packing lists as soon as they receive an acceptance letter.

If they don’t own everything on their packing list, they start asking for gifts and saving money to buy what they need.

-------------------------------------

But what are the most useful off-to-college gifts? What will you need on a daily basis? Break down your list into four categories: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Make your list from there with the following suggestions.

Physical: Durable Water Bottle and No-Slip Slippers

Most college students have just turned 18 and are on their own for the first time. Some may know what items you need to survive at college, but others don’t. Hydration during college is key since many college campuses are big and require lots of walking. A durable water bottle is the best way to stay hydrated.

You also want to stay comfortable when walking around your dorm. Most dorms feature cold stone or wood flooring. Keep your feet warm and comfortable with no-slip slippers.

Mental: Card Games and Noise-Canceling Headphones

Mentally adjusting to life on your own for the first time is hard. You will need a way to connect with other people and have fun to ease that adjustment. Card games are small and pack easily. Plus, you can always include others and play together.

When you need to spend your mental energy focusing, noise-canceling headphones will come in handy. Dorms are often noisy since so many people live in them. A good pair of headphones that can cut out the noise will help you enjoy your music and focus on your schoolwork.

Emotional: Journal and Weighted Blanket

The first year of college is an emotional time. As we mentioned above, adjusting to life on your own for the first time is hard, which can bring out many emotions. Journaling those emotions provides healthy emotional regulation, so ask for a journal before you move.

You should also ask for a weighted blanket. Weighted blankets can ease stress, anxiety, and depression, all of which are unfortunately common in college students. Anyone with a neurological processing disorder will also find them soothing since college is often overstimulating.

Spiritual: Religious Literature and Accessories

Some students plan to experiment with religious and spiritual beliefs once they’re out of their parent’s house. Others love the belief system they grew up in but are unsure of how to continue practicing on their own. A new copy of religious literature, such as a new Quran or pocket Bible, can help you maintain that connection. There are many reasons why you should carry a pocket Bible or another religious book, including demonstrating your faith. Demonstrating your faith can help you find other faithful people to connect with.

Religious accessories, such as a new prayer rug, devotional, or mezuzah, can also help spiritual college students stay strong in their faith. Ask for these gifts if you believe they’ll help you maintain your faith in a new place.

The most useful off-to-college gifts meet students’ physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. While these gift ideas fit into these categories, they may not meet your specific needs. Consider your needs while you prepare for college and make your list accordingly.
