Opposition To Obama Notre Dame Appearance Mounting

Pro-lifers and other conservative groups are responding in anger to President Obama’s scheduled commencement address on May 17 at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. The Roman Catholic university invited the president to speak to new graduates although Mr. Obama has espoused views contrary to church teaching, including holding strident views on abortion. The university has a tradition of inviting the sitting U.S. president to speak at its commencement and awarding him an honorary degree.

college studentsRandall Terry, who is the Founder of Operation Rescue, a 1980s era pro-life organization that attempted to blockade abortion clinics before being being effectively shut down by the U.S. Justice Department a number of years later, is among the many voices sharing their opposition to Obama’s speech.

Holding Views In Opposition To Church Teaching

At the heart of this opposition, people are noting that President Obama holds views which are contrary to church teachings. Points of contention include Obama’s recent rulings such as an executive order issued upon taking office whereby the new president lifted funding restrictions for groups which provide abortions overseas. And, although the president has expressed his opposition to same gender marriage, he also opposes a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and believes that civil unions should become law.

The president of Yorktown University, a strictly internet based school, has made known his disappointment to Notre Dame president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, CSC. In his letter, Richard J. Bishirjian reaffirmed that President Obama’s position on abortion, stem cell research and homosexuality are not in keeping with Church doctrine.

He added, “Since leadership skills are something that Notre Dame is expected to develop in its students, consider the impression you are making on those students. Students admire fighters—and especially the Fighting Irish.”

Joe Scheidler Speaks Out

The Pro-Life Action League of Chicago is also opposing Notre Dame’s choice of President Obama issuing a press release calling on the university to rescind their invitation.

“Over the first two months of his administration, Barack Obama has established himself as the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history,” said League National Director Joe Scheidler, himself a graduate of Notre Dame, a Catholic university. “My alma mater should not be providing a platform for this president.”

In addition to appearing at Notre Dame, President Obama will deliver commencement addresses at Arizona State University on May 13th and at the U.S. Naval Academy on May 22nd.
