Missing College Students: Where Is Morgan Harrington?

What is a parent’s worse nightmare? That could be any number of things, but a report that your son or daughter is missing is certainly among the very worst dreams come true.

missing youIn Virginia, Morgan Harrington went missing on October 17th, after attending a Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. After leaving the concert, the Virginia Tech student was separated from her friends and seen no more. On Saturday, a community search was conducted in the vicinity of the University of Virginia in hopes of finding the coed.

Dickinson Students Found Dead

The Harrington search comes just days after investigators pulled a white 1997 Jeep Cherokee from a North Dakota pond last Tuesday night, finding the bodies of three women students from Dickinson State University who were reported missing just two days earlier.

Kyrstin Gemar, 22, Ashley Neufeld, 21, and Afton Williamson, 20 were last heard from at 11:18 p.m. when a call for help from one of the women was received by a friend, who then called police. All three women were members of the college’s Blue Hawk softball team.

Older Cases

There are a number of older missing persons cases involving college students which remain unresolved. Among those of the past decade or so are the following:

Hyun Jong Song (“Cindy”) – Missing since November 1, 2001, Cindy was born in South Korea and moved to the United States with her family in 1995, enrolling in Penn State a few years later. A senior, Cindy was set to graduate the following Spring with a degree in Integrated Arts.

Yim Yeung Tsui (“Jimmy”) – Jimmy was a student at Stony Brook University in New York and went missing on August 26, 1998. He was just a few days away from beginning his third year of college.

Kimberly Dawn Stewart – Last seen on January 18, 2009, the Trenton, MO resident and North Central Missouri student is 31 years old. She is also known to some as Kim Brown.

Brian Shaffer — A 27 year old Ohio State University student when he disappeared on April 1, 2006, Brian was last seen leaving a bar, The Ugly Tuna Saloona in Columbus. His disappearance come just one month after the death of his mother; since then his father and grandfather have also died.
