5 College Youth Camps


Most colleges operate on a much more relaxed schedule during the summer months, offering summer and remedial classes for those who want them. But colleges are also a great place for youngsters to visit including middle school and high school students needing a place to “hang out” while on their own summer break.

5It isn’t possible to list every single college youth camp offered, but the following sample is being shared with parents to let them know that their own nearby colleges and universities may have a program in place. To that end, these five institutions of higher learning have your children in mind, offering music lessons, sports enrichment and other programs this summer:

Meredith College – This Raleigh, NC women’s college offers a variety of camps for youngsters from sports to piano to composition and beyond. Most are for four or five days with the occasional six and ten day camp offered.

Centenary College – Located in Hackettstown, NJ, the Centenary Summer Scholars program offers four one-week sessions beginning on July 11. Day, overnight and weekend options are available with classes covering creative writing, computer programming and design, dance, fashion design and veterinary science among those offered. Open to rising eight through twelfth grade students.

St. Olaf College – Head off to Northfield, Minnesota this summer if chess is something you enjoy. During the last week of July, St. Olaf College offers a camp for youngster aged 17 and above and already proficient at the game. Premier players and teachers from around the world will be on hand to help you improve your chess skills.

Oregon State University – Offering pre-college programs, OSU has programs for elementary, middle and high school aged students. 4-H, marine study, engineering and newspaper institute are among the programs offered.

The University of Arizona – Game programming, pre-med, engineering robotics, fencing and writing are just some of the camps offered in Tucson this summer. Limited enrollments; get wait-listed if a class is full.
