College Scholarships: February 2011 Roundup


College scholarships provide an important way for students to secure funding, sometimes spelling the difference between obtaining a degree or missing out on higher education completely. From time to time, offers a round up of scholarships currently available including today’s list featuring a variety of opportunities worthy of your consideration.

The Hispanic College Fund — If you are of Hispanic origin, a U.S. citizen, have a financial need and maintain a 3.0 GPA, then the Hispanic College Fund should be considered. Since 1993, the fund has awarded $15 million in college scholarships for more than 5,400 students. This year’s deadline is March 1, 2011, for the 2011-2012 academic year. Scholarships range from $500 to $10,000.

Marriott Scholars Program 2011 — The Marriott Scholars Program offers financial support of up to $9,000 per year for four years for scholarship recipients, but they take that award one step further by offering students continual career guidance and mentoring by Marriott hotel managers and corporate executives. Deadline is March 1, 2011.

A Nurse I Am — Nursing students are eligible to apply for a $2,000 college scholarship sponsored by Cherokee Uniforms. Candidates will need to have watched either version of “A Nurse I Am” – the 32-minute Educational Version or the 62-minute documentary — preferably both, and write a 750-word essay, answering this question: “Which of the attributes of the nurses who appear in the film “A Nurse I Am” would you most like to emulate – and why?” The deadline is March 1, 2011.

Foundation for Rural Education and Development — The deadline for this year’s FRED scholarships is fast approaching, February 11, 2011, to be exact. Scholarships of $1,000 to $5,000 are awarded to America’s most promising students who reside in rural areas of our country. In 2010, 63 recipients benefitted from $75,000 in scholarship funding. A similar amount is expected to be awarded in 2011.

USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships — USA Funds will be awarding $1,500 individual scholarships to students with economic need through its scholarship program.  USA Funds is a nonprofit organization working to “…enhance postsecondary education preparedness, access and success by providing and supporting financial and other valued services.” The application deadline is February 15, 2011.

STOP Hunger Scholarships — If you are active in the battle to stop hunger, the Sodexo Foundation’s STOP Hunger scholarships may be of interest to you. Open to students from kindergarten through grad school who have shown an on-going commitment to their community by providing unpaid volunteer services impacting hunger in the US within the last 12 months. Special weight is given to students working to fight childhood hunger. The application deadline is February 18, 2011.
