Why You Should Pick the School You Love: Advice From an Ex College Student
  • Opening Intro -

While you may have a parent or a friend telling you that "Enter College Name Here" is better, is it really?

I look back and realize that part of the reason I was able to be successful this year was because I picked where my heart told me to go.

I was able to do better in an environment that I was happy in, rather than forcing myself to go somewhere "better" and always wondering "what if?"...

More advice from a college friend:

During your senior year of high school, you always get asked the same questions first. “So where are you going to college next year?” Some people have had their plan for years, while others are still trying to figure out where to apply.

As a student who did well in school, people expected me to attend a certain tier university. I’m sure many of you feel or felt this same way. You feel pressured to go to the best school you get into to show people that yes, you are as smart as they thought or yes, you are smarter than they thought you were.

So when I fell in love with my state flagship, I had some insecurities. Will people think I couldn’t handle the other wonderful schools I got into? Will they forget that I got in altogether and think I settled?

After finishing my freshman year in college I feel as though I have a new perspective on this struggle and would like to share it with those of you who are currently going through it or have a loved one who might be feeling this way as they continue their academic journey.

How to Select Your College Major – WiseChoice:

College is About You

The four years that you spend in college are yours. You can spend your time on what you love. If you know which school will give the most opportunity to do that, then don’t hesitate to make that your place.

Regardless of what other people think about your choice, it is all yours. Make your school yours. Jump in a join clubs that you love and take classes that challenge you. This is SO much easier if you go to the school that excites you. You feel fueled to do what you want and make your four years in college unforgettable.

You Know You Best

And don’t forget it! You know in your heart where you are meant to be. The campus that makes your heart flutter when you step on campus. The university that overwhelms you with opportunities. The place that makes you excited for you future. Why fight this feeling?

While you may have a parent or a friend telling you that “Enter College Name Here” is better, is it really? I look back and realize that part of the reason I was able to be successful this year was because I picked where my heart told me to go. I was able to do better in an environment that I was happy in, rather than forcing myself to go somewhere “better” and always wondering “what if?”.

You know what you want out of college. You know where you’ll find happiness. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Brag About Your School

Educate the public and let go of your insecurities in one fell swoop! If you’re in a similar position as me right now and picked where you love and feel as though people might question your intelligence or ability, show them why there’s no question. Share articles from your school’s Facebook page when they talk about exciting new opportunities. Tell them how happy you are and how you love the challenges you have faced.

Let me be clear. Don’t be a jerk and hate on other schools or be obnoxious and post something every few hours. Just let people know that your school is a great place where you and others can thrive.

Let Others Know!

I hope this bit of advice either encourages you to go to that university that you are thinking about right now or affirms the choice that you have already made. Whether you are still awaiting college or are already there, I hope you can use this advice to shape the rest of your academic career.

If this has helped you or you feel as though it would help someone else in your life, share it on Facebook or Twitter so that you can help someone else feel empowered to pick the school that they love.
