But have you ever thought about giving back as a thank you for all they have done for you? Colleges are there to educate and prepare you for your future. But oftentimes they don’t get to see or hear about how it made you successful.
Before College
“Where are you going to college?”
It’s what every high school student hears dozens, if not hundreds of times during the final months of their senior year. Countless hours are spent applying to your “top 3 choices,” touring college campuses and being courted by college recruiters who tell you all the wonderful amenities this particular campus has.
The focus is always on you and how you can get the most out of your college choice.
During College
Who is the main focus during your four years? Well you are of course. You are catered to by the sororities or fraternities. The college president greets you on your first day and welcomes you. He encourages you to fully dive in and get the most of your time here.
You focus on your studies during the week and focus on your parties on the weekend. You enjoy the on campus gym, the on campus library, the unending list of activities that are offered to you. It’s all about you.
After College
So you finally graduated. Congratulations! You collect your diploma, throw your hat in the air, and off you go to a brave new world. You apply to jobs in your chosen career field, accept a job offer and begin the task of climbing the ladder. Five years on, your making a great living, working in the field you love and are enjoying life.
But maybe it’s time to stop and think about how you got here. There are dozens of people, hundreds really, who helped make you a success. Professors, administrators, coaches, behind the scenes staff; they all have played a part in getting you to where you are at today. Want to know how you can show your support and send a thank you?

Here are Three Things any College Alumni Can do to Give Back
1. Join an alumni group
This is a free way to show support for your college. It is a great way to spread the word about the college, to organize events for the college and to connect with past graduates and educators.
2. Give your time
Don’t have the extra money to contribute to the fundraising campaign. That’s totally fine. Your college relies heavily on volunteers to man the phones, stuff the envelopes and participate in service projects.
3. Attend sporting events
You may not realize how helpful this is for your college campus; but trust me, it is. Every dollar that you spend on tickets, food and raffles, is one more dollar that adds to the college’s bottom line. And the bigger crowds they can gather, the more buzz the school generates. Which of course translates into more students and a further impact on the community.
Your college may not expect anything in return for the education they gave you, but you will not regret giving back a little of your time, energy and money. And you’ll have fun doing it!
