Here’s Why You Should Encourage Your Child to Get an MBA Online
  • Opening Intro -

Is your college student planning to get an MBA someday?

Are you expected to help him or her pay for it?

Don’t panic just yet – while a traditional, on-campus MBA program can run students upwards of $200,000 or more in tuition, books, fees, and living expenses, technology has brought us a new and better way. These days, plenty of ambitious young people – and, for that matter, older people – are earning their MBAs online, and there’s no reason your student shouldn’t join them.

Online MBAs Are as Good as Traditional MBAs

Some parents hesitate to recommend online education to their children because they’re worried that the education their kids receive from such a program will be less academically rigorous than that offered in a traditional, brick-and-mortar setting. That’s a common misconception, as online education still bears a lingering stigma for some.

In fact, students in online MBA programs take their courses from the same professors that teach on-campus courses, so they get the same high-quality education, and they’re held to the same high academic standard. Students in online MBA programs find themselves working as much as 20 hours per week per class, to complete readings, participate in online discussions, complete group projects, do research, and finish other assignments. Many reputable and accredited colleges and universities now offer online MBA programs.

Employers respect these degrees, too. Hiring managers understand that earning an advanced degree online requires a great deal of self-discipline and a significant time commitment. The fact that many online MBA students work full time while earning their degrees only underscores these professionals’ work ethic and ambition.

Your Student Can Work While Earning an MBA Online

While an increasing number of MBA programs are open to accepting students directly out of undergrad or with fewer than three years of work experience, the vast majority of MBA admissions committees are looking for students with several years of work experience. Online MBA programs are perfect for adults who want to earn their degree without leaving the workforce, because they’re designed with flexibility in mind.

You know what it’s like to have bills to pay, a mortgage, student debt, financial goals, and a family to care for. If given the choice between dropping out of the workforce for two years to earn an advanced degree you need, and enrolling in an online program that lets you earn an MBA on your own time, which would you choose? It’s a no-brainer.

Going back to school online will let your child stay in his or her job, and continue earning a full-time salary, which goes a long way to ease the financial blow that going back to school can deliver. If your student is working, he or she will be able to pay much of his or her own fees, tuition costs, and expenses.

Choosing an Online Program Could Save Your Student a Lot of Money

One of the most appealing parts of earning an MBA online is the reduced price tag that comes with it. While tuition for online MBA programs can range from $5,000 to $50,000 a year, your student will save a lot of the other costs that come with attending graduate school. These costs include those of moving to a new city, renting an apartment close to campus, and commuting to classes.

Besides, your student may be able to get a break on tuition as well. Many universities offer special scholarships to alumni, so your student may get a tuition break if he or she can enroll in a program offered by his or her alma mater. Your student may also be able to get tuition assistance from his or her employer. Many employers offer tuition assistance to their employees, because it gets them a more valuable, more highly trained employee. If your student plays his or her cards right, their online MBA could even be free!

These days, earning an MBA online is a smart move, both financially and professionally. Online MBA programs offer multiple opportunities to save money on tuition and living expenses, while giving students the same high-quality education they’d receive on campus. If your college student is hoping to get an MBA, talk to him or her about going to grad school online.
