You Like Solving Problems
Great salespeople are problem solvers. Prospective buyers of goods and services are looking to resolve an issue or fill a need. Great salespeople are terrific at sussing out what the problem is and solving it.
Often, someone comes into a retail shop or makes a call to a service provider without quite knowing what they need. They do know what’s bugging them, or they know they’re feeling dissatisfied about something. A successful salesperson will be able to discern what’s bothering a potential customer and suggest a solution that resolves their issue with better-than-expected results.
You’re a Good Listener
The first thing an excellent salesperson does is listen. You can’t solve someone’s problem or fill their need if you don’t listen to what they have to say. Nothing shuts down a prospect faster than a salesperson who tries to foist a product or service on them that they don’t need or want.
Listening your way to a sale may involve a prolonged process of building a relationship. Patience and a genuine interest in other people and their issues and concerns bode well for a career in sales.
You Like Setting and Achieving Goals
The foundation of a sales career involves meeting and exceeding targets and goals. If you enjoy structuring your work by identifying goals, achieving them, and building your next goals atop your achievement, sales may be a fulfilling career for you.
You’re Resilient
Pleasant persistence is a characteristic many successful salespeople share. They hear “no” as an opportunity to probe a little and try again to find a solution for a problem that will please a customer.
Repeated rejection doesn’t phase a good salesperson. They simply pick themselves up and carry on with a new approach, a different solution, or a new contact that provides a fresh start for a sale.
You’re Honest
If you think a good salesperson must exaggerate, obfuscate, or dissemble, you’ve got the wrong idea. The best salespeople are honest and trustworthy. They don’t hide facts or try to lure customers or clients into a purchase that doesn’t truly meet their needs.
Customers who didn’t find what they needed the first time around will return to deal with a salesperson who had their best interests in mind.
