How Will You Spend Your Spring Break?

-------------------------------------

Spring break is a time of excess, wild debauchery on par with ancient Rome, at least that is how some people depict this week of off-campus rest and relaxation. Certainly, some students are looking for round the clock partying while others prefer a toned down week. Regardless of how you like to spend your week off, do you know where you’ll be for Spring Break 2008?

Say the words Spring Break to many students and alumni and you’ll hear the reply Fort Lauderdale mentioned often. Fort Lauderdale along with Panama City, FL and South Padre Island in Texas are among the top destinations for college students.

However, international destinations have also become quite popular thanks to low airfare, good exchange rates, and a guarantee of wonderful beach weather. The following destinations offer everything a college student wants when traveling away from campus:

Acapulco — This prized Mexican resort turns into a party town for several weeks during the month of March when most schools hold their spring breaks. Some people consider Acapulco as the most wild of destinations with ’round the clock parties at the pool and on the beach. Other popular Mexican destinations include Puerto Vallarta and Cancun.

Bahamas — It is “better in the Bahamas” or at least cruise operators want you to believe that. One spring break website, StudentCity, organizes cruises to the Bahamas just for college students. All inclusive, these cruises last from 4 to 7 days with plenty of port time for those seeking to disembark.

Jamaica — Negril is the destination of choice in this small Caribbean nation known for its relaxed/party atmosphere. 50 foot diving cliffs, awe-inspiring sunsets, beach bonfire parties, and native musicians performing nightly are some of the highlights of this trip.

Dominican Republic —  All-inclusive isn’t just reserved for cruise lines as a visit to Punta Cana can be had for under $500 for four nights. The Dominican Republic is well-known for its high end tourist spots, many of which are eagerly welcoming college students on break.

Service Week — Lots of college students have decided that spring break isn’t for them, preferring to spend the week helping others.  Some head off to New Orleans to help Habit for Humanity rebuild that hurricane-ravaged city, head to Costa Rica to do conservation work, or even volunteer locally at a church, food bank, homeless shelter or other facility.

No matter how you plan on spending your week, you can stretch your dollars further by incorporating smart money tips to help you save cash.
