Online Education: American Public University

Men and women who serve the United States of America sometimes sense that they are under-served when it comes to their educational options. The unique nature of military personnel, i.e. people who are on the go and unable to put down roots makes it difficult, almost impossible for them to pursue a college degree.

Serving Men & Women In Uniform…Civilians Too

online educationThanks to the advent of distant learning, members of the armed forces can take classes while in the field, allowing them to acquire an associates, bachelors or masters degree. One such school geared toward helping to educate our men and women in uniform is American Public University (APU), which was founded by a former Marine Corps officer and instructor in Quantico, Virginia. The APU program was originally designed to serve those who protect us from our enemies but recently expanded to welcome civilians through its two institutions of higher learning.

The American Public University and the American Military University are both owned and operated by the for-profit American Public University System which is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council. Combined, the universities offer more than one degree and certificate programs, all of which are completed online.

Students From More Than One Hundred Countries

APUS corporate headquarters are located in Charles Towne, West Virgina while its administrative headquarters can be found in Manasseh, Virginia. Right now, more than 50,000 students from one hundred countries take APUS courses, most of whom are military personnel.

Unlike some distant learning opportunities, APUS does not mandate a specific time when students must log on, which is great for military and homeland security personnel who need maximum flexibility with their schedules. Course material is mailed out to students in advance of the class start date so that reading assignments can be completed without logging on to the computer. Some courses offer downloadable e-books as well.

Staying In Touch Is Easy

Students communicate with their instructors via email and telephone and are encouraged to stay in contact with other students via message boards and online chat. APUS says they are particularly sensitive to the needs of transfer students who are seeking to finish coursework begun elsewhere, generously accepting a greater number of credits than most schools.

As with any distant learning opportunity, you need to make certain that APUS has exactly what you need in order to ensure that you can complete your education, receiving the degree offered. Contact the school directly for further details.
