Loyola Latest College To Acquire A New Name

You almost need a scorecard to track all of the name changes over the past few years. Colleges are not only becoming universities, but some are changing their names completely as they set to redefine themselves for the 21st century.

Loyola University Maryland

Four universities in the U.S. are named for Ignatius Loyola, a 16th century Roman Catholic priest. Loyola University Maryland is the oldest of the lot, having recently completed a name change from Loyola College.

Four universities in the U.S. are named for Ignatius Loyola, a 16th century Roman Catholic priest. Loyola University Maryland is the oldest of the lot, having recently completed a name change from Loyola College.

The most recent change involves the newly minted Loyola University Maryland, the former Loyola College which is still located in Baltimore. The Roman Catholic school was founded by Jesuit priests in 1852 and has had to share its name with three other schools also named for Ignatius Loyola, a 16th century Spanish knight and priest.

Though it is the first Loyola school of higher education in the country, Loyola University Maryland is the last of the four to change its name. Loyola University Chicago, Loyola University New Orleans and Loyola Marymount University are the other schools, each founded and run separately despite the Loyola nomenclature.

Intellectual Rigor, Community Partner

In a Baltimore Sun op-ed piece this past Friday, Rev. Brian F. Linnae who is president of Loyola University Maryland, explained the reasons for the name change stating, “The word “university” conveys a depth of intellectual rigor, a richness of cultural engagement, that has long been part of the Loyola academic experience.” With that change, Loyola pledges even more rigorous academic exploration while upholding its Catholic heritage and beliefs as well as continuing to be a good neighbor to the Baltimore community in general.

In his article Fr. Linnae referenced a recent shooting in its neighborhood, an event that killed one man, injuring two others. The university has pledged to do its part to help revitalize the York Road corridor just east of their main campus where the shooting occurred. That move was designed to reinforce the university’s commitment to the city which has been its home throughout the university’s 157 year old history.

The school marked its name change on Friday with a convocation; Georgetown University President John DeGioia delivered the keynote address . A dessert reception and fireworks celebration Saturday night concluded the festivities honoring the renewed Loyola University Maryland.
