Community Colleges White House Summit Scheduled


Dr. Jill Biden, wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, will be hosting a Summit on Community Colleges on October 5, 2010. This first-ever event comes at the request of President Barack H. Obama in a bid to underscore the essential place that community colleges have in building up America’s workforce and enabling the country to reach its educational goals.

According to the White House the summit is “…an opportunity to bring together community colleges, business, philanthropy, federal and state policy leaders, and students to discuss how community colleges can help meet the job training and education needs of the nation’s evolving workforce, as well as the critical role these institutions play in achieving the President’s goal to lead the world with the highest proportion of college graduates by 2020.”

Distinguished Guests

The event will include Secretary of Education Arne Duncan; Melinda Gates, Co-Chair and Trustee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and community college leaders and graduates from Arizona, Chicago, Miami, Michigan and elsewhere. The summit is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m., concluding with a closing session at 3:00 p.m. This event will be streamed live via the White House website.

Summit attendees will discuss how community colleges can do their part to ensure that America has the most educated workforce in the world, an effort to help American businesses compete globally. That effort would help the country achieve President Obama’s goal of leading the world with the highest proportion of college grads by 2020. Community colleges are considered to be an integral part of the country’s economic vision.

Multiple Sessions

Dr. Biden will launch the Summit in the East Room of the White House with a plenary session. Following, there will be a series of breakout sessions, schedule to take place in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. In summation, Dr. Biden will assemble a concluding session whereby participants will discuss issues and best practices brought up in the breakout sessions. That closing session is scheduled to take place in the South Court Auditorium.

Dr. Biden is an adjunct professor at Northern Virginia Community College and a vocal support of two-year colleges. will share details of the summit by the end of next week.
