College Scholarships: January 2011 Roundup, Part 2

Earlier this week we shared with our readers a number of college scholarship opportunities that are currently available, each with February 2011 deadlines.  That list is a good start, but we have more opportunities to share with you as follows:

Robert Sheppard Leadership Award — This scholarship is open to students who are members of The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) only. The Robert Sheppard Leadership Award is for $2,000 and will be given to an NSHSS member “demonstrating outstanding dedication to community service and initiative in volunteer activities.” Deadline is February 21, 2011.

Donald A. Strauss Foundation — Multiple college scholarship opportunities are offered by the Strauss Foundation who awards scholarships to full-time students at select California colleges and universities. The foundation awards 10-15 $10,000 scholarships annually — these funds are to be used to pay expenses of the public service project students are involved with the remaining funds used to cover some tuition, fees, books, room and board. Deadlines are for various dates in January and February 2011.

Off To College Scholarship Sweepstakes — We’ve mentioned this “sweepstakes” college scholarship opportunity from SunTrust Bank in the past, but it bears a follow up mention. This Richmond, Virginia, based bank is awarding $1,000 scholarships monthly to students, an award that is not based on GPA or merit. Registration is ongoing and the last of the awards will be announced on May 13, 2011. Unlike other scholarships all you need to do is to enter for a chance to win.

NSCS Academy Abroad Scholarship — You must be a member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars to be eligible for this award which will help a student interest in studying abroad in Australia or China in summer 2011. You also must have already been accepted into an Academy Abroad program to be eligible for one of three $500 prizes to be offered. Applications are now being accepted — the deadline is February 28, 2011.

NRAEF Scholarships — The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation supports college students who plan to pursue careers in food service, offering several different opportunities to win an award each year. Incoming freshmen can apply for a $2,500 award or a $3,500 award if you demonstrate a strong entrepreneurial spirit. If you’re an educator, there is a $1,750 award available for you too. The deadline for the student awards is August 17, 2011, while educators must apply by February 9, 2011.

National Commission for Cooperative Education — Advancing cooperative and work-integrated education is the goal of the NCCE who partners with Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, R.I.T., the University of Cincinnati, the University of Toledo and Wentworth Institute of Technology to help students. To apply, your high school GPA must be at least 3.5 and your application and 500 word essay must be in by February 15, 2011. Awards are decided by partnership institutions.
